Present Coaching Involvements…

I started coaching the Javelin in New Jersey during the Spring 2006 outdoor track season, and have witnessed rapid improvement and great satisfaction in all the athletes I’ve been fortunate enough to teach. I volunteered at my alma mater Middletown High School South. Among those who excelled dramatically with my support was a Sophomore Thrower who, after just a few practice sessions at South, placed Fifth at the Monmouth County Championships with a PR of 163’ (up 26 feet from his previous PR of 137'), and won the 2006 Monmouth County Frosh-Soph Championship. My first private client, a Junior at Ocean Township High School who had thrown a PR of 148’ as a Sophomore, increased his PR by 20 feet after just 8-10 sessions. One week and two peak-performance coaching sessions later, he threw a PR of 182'-7" (an improvement of 34 feet from his previous year's best) to place 1st in the 2006 Shore-Conference Championships. In our last practice session in June 2006, he was throwing in the low-to-mid 190's. I've been coaching a Junior from Morris County for whom great things are happening. And some up-and-coming Junior and Sophomore Girls and Boys Throwers on the Jersey Shore are enrolled in my year-round javelin coaching program… In football, I have coached the Kickers and Punters at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and, at the high school level, one of the most highly recruited players in NJ at the request of North Bergen High School Head Coach Vin Ascolese, and an outstanding Junior kicker at Brick Memorial High School by invitation of Head Coach Fred Sprengel.

Athletic & Coaching Background…

I was a student-athlete at Middletown High School South (Class of '83). Rated one of the top high school Punters/Kickers in the nation in the early '80s; received All-County, All-Shore and All-State honors; NJ State Champion in the Javelin in 1982, with a High School PR of 220’ 3". Attended Cornell University (Class of ’87; BA in Psychology with emphasis in Child and Sport Psychology); served as Captain of both Varsity Track & Field and Football teams. Before sustaining a career-ending injury in the Javelin early in Junior year, set school record Javelin throw that would stand for 17 years, 230'-1". Elected Captain of Cornell Track & Field Team by teammates; stayed on to Student-Coach my team for remainder of Junior and all of my Senior year. In football, first Punter ever honored with the team’s Pop Warner Most Valuable Player Award in 1986, Cornell's best season in decades under coach Maxie Baughan. Punting for a gross average of 39.7 yards, and a net average of 38.8 yards--with less than one return-yard per punt--my net-to-gross punting average ratio remains the best ever recorded at Cornell. Received All-Ivy, All-ECAC and All-America honors in football, and recorded one of the best Javelin Throws in the USA in 1986. Inducted into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999, Cornell's All-Time Football Team in 2006, and Middletown South's Eagles Athletic Hall of Fame in its inaugural year, 2005. Tried out for several years with the NFL as Punter/Kicker (i.e., Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys). While training those years in Miami, I volunteered with the University of Miami Men's and Women's Track Teams, and coached mostly non-scholarship athletes, one of whom eventually scored for the Hurricanes in their regional championship. I entered the business world in New York, and developed a successful consulting business. But I never forgot my love for coaching/teaching…I knew I would either return to school for my Ph.D. in Clinical Child/Sport Psychology and/or teach and coach kids at any level… After volunteering as Kicking/Punting Coach at North Bergen High School in 2005, I began, in 2006, my career in private coaching high school and youth athletes in the events I know best and enjoy so much, the Javelin Throw and Kicking & Punting.
